Fantasy album: Beatles 70
What if the Beatles hadn't broken up in 1970? What would their next album have sounded like? We can make some educated guesses based on the extant solo albums. I've come up with one track list, using Harrison's All Things Must Pass, McCartney, and Lennon's Plastic Ono Band as source texts. A contribution from Ringo would have to wait. (He did release an album of standards in 1970, but his original "It Don't Come Easy" wouldn't be released as a single until 1971.) You'll note some glaring absences in this list: where are "My Sweet Lord", "God", "Mother," "Working Class Hero"? Tracks such as this tend to be intensely personal in nature and it's hard to fit them into a group mix. They seem genuinely like solo material to me. I tried to find tracks on the solo albums that either sound like Beatles songs or songs that would have worked well in a group format. Note also that I'm saving more great George Harrison tracks from All Things Must Pass for the 1971 fantasy album, since George didn't release a studio album that year.
Side One
1. "Instant Karma" (Lennon, Plastic Ono Band)
2. "What Is Life" (Harrison, All Things Must Pass)
3. "Every Night" (McCartney, McCartney)
4. "Isolation" (Lennon, Plastic Ono Band)
5. "Teddy Boy" (McCartney, McCartney)
6. "Beware Of Darkness" (Harrison, All Things Must Pass)
7. "Remember" (Lennon, Plastic Ono Band
Side Two
8. "Maybe I'm Amazed" (McCartney, McCartney)
9. "Look At Me" (Lennon, Plastic Ono Band)
10. "Junk" (McCartney, McCartney)
11. "Love" (Lennon, Plastic Ono Band)
12. "That Would Be Something" (McCartney, McCartney)
13. "Hold On" (Lennon, Plastic Ono Band)
14. "All Things Must Pass" (Harrison, All Things Must Pass)
Such an album would have clocked in at over 44 minutes. And I think it would have been an excellent rebound release after the salvage operation that was Let It Be. My choices for single releases would be "Maybe I'm Amazed," "What is Life," "All Things Must Pass", and "Instant Karma".
